Pilot Plant and Lab Relocation
Project: Relocation
Features: Modification and Detail Design
Summary of Scope of Service

ATSI was selected to provide engineering design and field engineering services to relocate a Research and Development (R&D) Facility formerly located in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. The research facility had several business groups associated with the lab and pilot plant that had to be integrated into the R&D facility in Naperville, Illinois. ATSI supported the lab relocation and had complete responsibility for the pilot plant move. The pilot plant move required complete disassembly, establishing documents for installation at the new location, and process documents for safety review for operating approval. Little documentation existed on the pilot plant equipment and instrumentation. The pilot plant was controlled by an outdated DCS that required updating to conform to the new site requirements and as-builts of all control wiring for rewiring. ATSI established engineering field offices at the two sites to carry out these activities.
Services Provided
- Prepared electrical drawing for all power and instrumentation prior to tagging and disassembly for shipment
- Established pilot unit break points for present utilities and offgas support equipment to be duplicated at the new location
- Developed process piping and instrument diagrams
- Issued equipment arrangements and utility piping drawings to support construction activity at the new site
- Developed pilot unit control logic for safety reviews
- Prepared equipment fabrication specifications for a new thermo oxidizer and a wastewater treatment system at the new location
- Created civil design and construction drawings of all foundations, enclosures, and rooms for Class I, Division 1 units
- Provided on-site construction assistance at the new location
Steam Boiler House
Project: Steam Boiler House
Features: Detail Design and Construction Drawings
Summary of Scope of Services
ATSI was selected to provide design and installation engineering services for a new steam boiler house. The project consisted of sizing and specifying two (2) preengineered buildings; a 7,600 sq. ft. high bay Process Building to house two (2) 75,000 pound per hour package boilers with required support equipment and a 4,500 sq. ft. Administration Building, which contained the boiler control room, electrical equipment room, offices and lunchroom. ATSI provided design and construction drawings required for installation of the prefab buildings and all support equipment. The scope also included specification of all electrical equipment and all HVAC and air handling equipment. ATSI was responsible for soliciting competitive quotes for this equipment and performing b0th technical and commercial bid analysis, with final purchase recommendations.
Services Provided
- Size and specify process and administration pre-fab buildings.
- Architectural design for Administration Building.
- Design of all buildings and equipment foundations, including a blast wall.
- Equipment layout drawings.
- Design of structural steel for pipe and cable tray bridges and for equipment support and platforms.
- Design of piping, including underground sewer, utility and process piping.
- Design of electrical power distribution and grounding systems.
- Cable tray routing, electrical equipment locations, building lighting, conduit plans and cable schedules for all electrical equipment.
- “Red-line” mark-up of vendor DCS drawings.
- Control and interlock panel design.
- HVAC and air handling systems design and construction drawings.
- Provided specifications for all electrical and air handling equipment, obtained quotes, performed bid analysis and made purchase recommendations.
Cereal Packing Line
Project: Cereal Packaging Line
Features: Detail Design Engineering
Summary of Scope of Services
ATSI provided equipment layout and design engineering services to support the installation of a new cereal packaging line. The new line was connected to an existing cereal line on the fifth floor, which was modified to allow for this connection. The new line was diverted to a conveying system which was transported to the second floor to be detected for metal, weighed, packaged in liner bags, boxed, sealed, date stamped and routed to an existing conveyor to be palletized, stretch wrapped and warehoused.
Services Provided
- Review existing plant location, facilities and operation along with proposed project requirements.
- Layout cereal process and packaging equipment arrangement and coordinate engineering with equipment vendor.
- Design structural platforms and supports, mechanical conveying lines, modifications to existing process equipment to allow integration, perform engineering calculations and prepare drawings.
- Assist Owner and Contractors during construction phase and resolve problems.
