In today’s digital revolution it’s not what you know but how quickly you know it.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a business intelligence tool comprised of computer hardware, software, data, methods and key experienced personnel that help create, manipulate analyze and present information that is tied to a spatial location. By linking data to maps, creating “smart maps”, this technology is used by decision makers the world over to improve productivity and provide added value to their data which equates to time and cost savings.
By combining data from a variety of sources, like aerial photography, survey/GPS, field sampling, CADD, digitized and scanned maps and multiple databases, GIS is able to overlay all of this information to create an interactive mapping system that converts data into information ultimately converting this information into knowledge.
GIS allows for more sophisticated capability modeling through the use of “what if” scenario comparisons enabling the user to “query” or ask questions relating to location conditions, patterns, modeling and trends.
When planning for a successful GIS, you must first think about what goals you want to ultimately reach and then everything else you do comes from that vision to ensure that the GIS will ultimately work towards serving a useful and important purpose.
